Mycology Hike

This is a morning hike, from 09h00 to 13h00, where Participants are invited to visit Buracas do Casmilo, a geological formation in the municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova. These Jurassic looking structures, which run from Ota to Coimbra, are also a part of Serra de Aira nature park and Candeeiros. Structures that  resemble giant cavities in the landscape and are estimated to be circa 160 million years old. You will be accompanied by an experienced guide in mycology and introduced to a mushroom tasting.

This structure is a wonderous concentration of holes – small caves that were horizontally developed with entrances that can reach up to ten metres. As far as it is known, these limestone formations were developed in a much colder climate than today. It was in these areas that herds of goats and sheep were sheltered.

The walk from the village up to the valley is as simple as it is magnificent. The route is an easy dirt road and is well signposted so you can enjoy the landscape with its trees and plants of different species.

The trails continue along the valley taking you from cave to cave. Over the years, Buracas do Casmilo has gained popularity due to its excellent climbing experiences.

The mushrooms are a speciality of the region.  It´s production and harvesting contributes to the conservation of nature and the maintenance of genuine traditions.
